John Calabrese – Drums

John started playing drums in 1969, taking private lessons from Ernie Croce in Queens, New York. He was taught the fundamentals of drumming and the importance of being able to play all musical styles. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Theory and Composition from Hunter College in New York City and a Master of Music Education degree from Lehman College also in New York City. He taught music in New York City for three years and has continued to teach in Sullivan County for the last 24 years. He currently teaches instrumental music to 4th, 5th & 6th grade students in Sullivan County, New York. John has played in many bands over the years in a variety of musical settings; jazz, rock, dance music, liturgical music, big bands, theatrical pit bands and concert bands. Fred King, Kevin Norton, Eliot Zigmund and Freddie Waits are just a few teachers who have inspired and guided him as a drummer. Some of his influences on the drums are Max Roach, Steve Gadd, David Garibaldi and ‘Philly’ Joe Jones.
He has been a member of SJP since the spring of 2010. He enjoys the eclectic repertoire of the band, the camaraderie of the band members and the lively rehearsals.
John lives in Grahamsville, New York with his wife of 27 years, they have 3 adult children.
